Excessive force alleged in officer’s videotaped beating of young man

Lawyers for a young man repeatedly kicked by a Seattle police officer at a convenience store filed a federal civil rights claim alleging their client was the victim of unjustified and excessive force. Attorney Chris Carney said D’vontaveous Hoston “was an innocent kid in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was exonerated; this is an important next step in justice for him.”

The officer who was caught on videotape repeatedly kicking Hoston was charged with fourth-degree assault; those charges were later dismissed when an expert witness changed his testimony. CGI later settled the case.

This was one of several high-profile incidents that led to a federal investigation, which found that the Seattle Police Department had engaged in a “pattern or practice” of using excessive force and violating people’s constitutional rights.
